Making a nice website and getting it to rank high on the search engines by providing unique and useful content that is updated regularly and by having links from authoritative websites in your field is a key factor for being successful online. People put a lot of effort in promoting their website either online through blogging, social networking, or email and newsletter subscriptions or off-line by sending out flyers and giving away promotional items like pens and calendars, but no matter how you go about promoting your website it’s important to start by getting a good domain name. Having a domain name that is easy to remember and that is considered by people to be the logical choice for what they are searching for can give the website a sense of authority and will be easier to promote especially if it is targeted towards a certain city or area. It could be very beneficial to real estate agents to get a few domain names that relate to their City and the type of real estate that they specialize in. Each domain name can be turned into a portal that can bring in new visitors, especially keyword rich domains that target niche areas with less competition. It seems like recently search engines are giving more preference to domain names that are the exact match to the location and the type of real estate that people are looking for and that’s why a lot of smart real estate agents are getting some long tail domain names (descriptive domains that have three or more keywords that relate to a certain city or type of real estate). It’s always better for the domain name to be under your own name so that you can have more control over your website later on incase if you decide to work for yourself. You can register a domain for around $10 dollars or you can buy one in the aftermarket which is usually a lot more expensive, but could be worth it in the long run if you can get a quality domain name.

Search engines like google has something called "spiders" that will crawl your website's content and list saves the keywords in their database. When a person performs a google search, google looks for those words used by the person, matches them with the words in their database and shows relevant sites. And the first thing spiders look for is either a domain name or an article heading. So yes, domain names ARE important.

But the spiders craws millions of sites daily and if you do not have anything new in your site or the site is sitting idle, it is probable that your site will show up in, say the 89th page of a google search. Now we don't want that, do we?

So even if a domain name is important, it is absolutely necessary to have good content in your website and keep your website updated on new things that are happening, this will keep the spiders coming and your site will gain respect in google's eyes.

Its worth mentioning that getting a domain name one can remember is important. Targeting keywords is good but if they cant remember the name they always sit around going I found this site once but cant recall the name. Ive done it to my own domains.

Yes, keywords are important and having a search related term in your domain will help but it is just part of the equation and there are many more and more important factors that effect ranking.

A domain name in my view should be more related to your Business name if not match it exactly (or as exactly as possible). If you are just starting a new business you are lucky in the sense that you can think of your Business name in terms of what your search terms may be.

If you have a long standing business you may not be so lucky, but, imagine the scenario where a potential lead has driven past your office, or, has received your name as a recommendation from a friend and then types it into a search engine only to not find your website because you are too busy promoting something else. Even worse, they find competitors sites!

Also, remember that there are only and possible only ever will be space for 10 natural listings and there are plenty of keyword related domains on page 15 and many non keyword related domains on page 1 !!!
