It all depends on the system you are using but there are simple sitemap tools around.
Here's an excel macro I wrote to generate a site map from a Xenu crawl.

It's cumbersome if you are adding content regularly so I'd recommend you get one specific to your content management system.
Which are you using?

There's a stand alone windows based tool on sourceforge. It's called google sitemap generator (oddly enough). Also, I've seen several online tools.

Google Webmaster Tools or sitemapsdotorg are probably the best resources.

Yes, I totally agree. The Google generator can be found here:

Also, another web based generator that has worked very well for me is here:

or you could do it manually. simply use the following pattern and copy it to notepad and save it as sitemap.xml.
where:Code:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <urlset> <url> <loc>your-url-here</loc> <priority>priority-num</priority> <lastmod>date-and-time-modified</lastmod> <changefreq>frequency-mode</changefreq> </url> </urlset>
your-url-here is your webpage address
priority-num ranges from 0.01 to 1, 1=100%
date-and-time-modified e.g. 2008-01-12T09:24:17+00:00
frequency-mode maybe (daily, weekly, monthly or always)
then just repeat the bold area for other pages of the site.Decorate your rooms with discount rugs, area rugs and shag rugs. The right way to brighten and cover your floors.

If your site has up to 500 pages you can use the free online sitemap generator at www.xml-sitemaps.com. I find the tool easy to use.
