Default Geo-specific TLD, Hosting and Regional SEO

Can anybody help me understand how important TLD is? If my target market is UK, should I use .co.uk domains only OR I can use .com domains as well. I know I can but does that hurt ranking?

Also, does it matter where my websites are hosted?

    Thanks in advance.

BUMP, i'm also interested in hearing some advice on this. I think it can help with "local" searches for SERP in Google; like where it shows local business'/places.

But there are plenty of ways to identify a certain region with your .com,, so I'm not sure if its "worth" it, because I would say that the .com is just a more legitimate domain from the start and could impact credibility when first building/advertising your site.

Beside that if you want to work on SEO, then .com is much more easier to target.

Dot com is king the rest are garbage extensions.
