How do you go about building a server?
Out of curriousity, what things go into builiding a personal server for your sites? I know that a server is merely a computer that stays on all the time and relays info but how do most business, promoting their hosting service establish their server?

In the simplest of ways, you just need a computer -- doesn't matter what it is... laptop, desktop. Pretty much any computer can be a "server". Now, depending on the load (traffic) the server will be receiving, you may need more or less memory/processor power.
To run a "web" server, there are many free web server apps you can download and install. For anyone to see your server you'll need it connected to the Internet. Don't forget to read your ISP's TOS (terms of service) to ensure running a 'server' is allowed (most times they'll want you to purchase their 'business' level of access to do this).
To answer your question on what 'most' businesses do, my guess is that they go with a 3rd party hosting company. It's cheaper to go this route in most cases, and all you need to do is upload your webpages to it to get started...Last edited by gotlivechat; 09-15-2010 at 08:49 PM. Reason: add notes

You can run a web server from home with a decent machine.. 2.0hgz processor, dual core, etc etc. But now days, why do it when there are so many other free /cheap sources available. The only time you will need a server is if you are trying to do something outside the limitations of the cheaper hosts.
