What programs do professional web designers use when building websites?

Are there a whole slew of programs they use side-by-side?

Professionals typically use the Adobe suite and do the majority of coding by hand via a text editor. Some of the semi-pros tend to slice their pages up via Photoshop or Fireworks.

The best advise would be to learn a programming language if you plan on making your own content management system (such as PHP, ASP, etc). The advantage of learning over hiring a guy is that you can save a lot of money. Regardless of what language you are coding in, you should have a based knowledge of HTML.

In regards to the design portion, a good working understand of Photoshop, Flash, etc-- can get you started-- but you do not necessarily need to know flash. But having a strong grasp of Photoshop or Fireworks is a plus. Once again, the advantage is that this can save you a lot of money...

Of course, having a good eye for design is required to really be strong as a web designer. It's far easier to learn the logic of programming, read up on security tips/methods, etc.. Then it is to learn how to make something pretty-- Some people just do not have the natural ability or the patience.. While some have the natural gift and would have never known it.

My suggestion... Practice practice learn read... practice practice learn read... If you on a deadline or someone else's money-- hire a professional until you are comfortable doing it yourself.

Remember - even someone with the best design tools can make bad websites. I have seen great websites that RANK WELL made with basic web editors.

Default I have professionally designed websites since 1998 and I use...

I use Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver... however, the software doesn't make the design. The designer does. You can use notepad and a free image editor and get the same results.

    I use:

    TextWrangler
    Photoshop
    Illustrator
    Transmit FTP

I code by hand because I am picky about my code. LOL
