It took a lot of time and effort to do proper SEO on my websites, but I think it's paying off for me now. I'm on page 1 on the search engines for my market, and I'm getting 2 or 3 legitimate leads a week from them. Link building is important, fresh and relevant content is too.

Internet marketing via a website can work very well, but only if you're found. So either you have to PPC, advertise your domain name, or do SEO. I prefer SEO since I don't have the capital for the other two. I've been at it for a year and I can't really say it's paid off...yet!

First of all you need good looking website, with good functionalities.
if you have large number of properties and users that will attract more users.
So after your website is ready, you have to start marketing.
you can start with classifieds on newspaper. magazine, craigslist.
email marketing
facebook/linkedin marketing
search engine optimization
link building
advertisement on other websites or adwords ( if needed)

Right now I am not seeing the worth of all my efforts in SEO for my website. Knowing that I got tons of very big competitors hopefully all my work would pay off.
