Also check your keywords. See if people actually use them.
Focus on keywords with high word searches but low competition.

That's right Jennie...You should choose keywords which are less in compitition and the main factor should be considered is to use generic keywords..this would also help you to get more and more traffic. In case you can't find suitable keywords then its better to use some tools for finding them..

The other main aspect is to do hit and trial method for keywords...use some relevant keywords for your website and then decide which one is getting more traffic to your website..

Quality of link comes first. Make sure you link from sites related to yours...
Try not to submit to Google first. Let Google find your site through other websites via link.
It makes a huge difference in terms of search results...
