Links - Quality Is Better Than Quantity
Building links to your website is by far the most important activity you can do in order to achieve high rankings on the most popular search engines. But many people tend to focus on quantity by going out and doing link exchanges or by submitting the same article to a ton of article directories. This will get you a lot of incoming links however the quality of the links you are getting is going to do more for your rankings than shear quantity.
Very often when I am doing an analysis of the top ranking websites in Google for a particular keyword phrases I find that a site with only a couple of hundred incoming links outranking other sites that have thousands of links. So how can this be? Well there are links that are are just better than others. The most important links can have one or many of the following qualities.
High Page Rank - Importance
Page Rank, or PR, is a measurement that Google gives to a page to gauge how important that page is. A link on an a page that is considered important by the the search engines will pass on some importance to your site. These can be local or national news sites or established blogs or sites.
High Trust Or Authority
If the search engines think a particular sites is trustworthy or an authority on your subject then a link from them will do wonders for your site. Directories like Yahoo or DMOZ can be a good way to get this kind of link. News sites can also get you an authoritative link.
Number Of Links
If the page that your link is going to be on has a low number of other links on it the more valuable that link will be. If you submit an article to blog the page your post is on will typically only have links for navigation on that site and your link and maybe a couple of other links. In contrast a link exchange page will have dozens of links pointed to many different sites. The fewer the links a page has the more relevant a link to your site will be received by the search engines.

Nice post. It is important to note that Google doesn't really care who links to your site - but it does pay very close attention to who YOU link to. Joining huge link networks without knowing who the other members are can be very damaging to you. Google considers some web sites to be parts of what it terms "bad neighborhoods". If you link to these it may decide you part of that neighborhood and your site could easily be relegated to the bottom of the heap in the rankings.

You are correct. All Google does is simply discount the value of the links that are not relevant, it does not "penalize" you for links to sites that are not relevant. It really just adds up to wasted time on the part of the site owner to go out and get those links.

Quality is always better than quantity! Remember that Google gives more value on the quality compared to those irrelevant sites that you are getting.

These are great tips to keep in mind when you are trying to build links for your sites. Of course, quality is more important than quantity. It's also important to make sure your links are not "nofollow"

I think here it's better to speak about the quantity of links as the more links you have , the visitors you are likely to have. I agree that Google doesn't matter the quality of your links. THe only thing that is important is the visitors on your site.

Yes it is very important to keep in mind the quality of links and just not concentrate on the quantity of the links.
I do feel that if someone has a PR4 site and he is submitting it in the directories which have 0PR, it is not good for the site. So remember to concentrate more on the quality of the links rather than their quantity.

Excellent post. Agree with all the above. A few links from quality sites are much better than hundreds of links from poor sites.
Bear in mind that the name of the links to your site also have a large part to say in the SEO value. Just the domain name is OK but having the domain name within an "href" tag including your search keywords is crucial.
