Google Penalty
[FONT="]By definition, SEO is an optimization process, and as such should not trigger a Google penalty. But be warned that some practitioners of SEO use unsanctioned techniques that could actually harm the ranks of their sites, and make them vulnerable to a severe (and deserved) Google penalty. I advise clients to implement only

Excellent points made by shruchi. Just to add a point of clarification (because it was something that came up in an off-line conversation with a colleague) regarding what is a google penalty, and what does (would) it mean to me?
Basically, the purpose of SEO is to improve your rankings so that when people are searching Google, they are more likely to find YOU in the results because you will have a better position in the SERPs (techno-lingo for Search Engine Results Pages). If you 'try too hard' at SEO and Google feels you are just creating spam to try to gain rank, your 'penalty' is that Google won't return your site for ANY searches! (more lingo, it's called getting 'sandboxed').
Of course this is the last thing you want; to be removed from possible search results for anywhere from 3 to 9 months. So again, take shruchi's info to heart. I just hope I helped clarify any confusion or lack of understanding from those, like my friend, who are not familiar with all of this.
all the best...

Yeah google is getting much smarter you can actually be penalized for being too good at SEO, because they see this as unnatural that is why nowadays its important to have a natural linking profile and you need to think more like a normal webmaster and not like an seo person.

How does someone check if they have a good penalty? Also is there a way to appeal a Google penalty if you were not doing anything on purpose? Thanks for the informational post

There is google reconsideration, but this is still hassle.. in order not to get banned or penalty. just make your process secure and legal.

As far as my knowledge, getting the rank one position in google for the main and targeted keyword in not easy. You need to work hard and also satisfy all the on page contents. But you can overcome this through oogle map submission.

Now I know what GOOGLE PENALTY is I've been hearing this word but I never had an idea about it, well I guess this should be a warning for spammers to beware.
