    Default Link Building

I have a quick question... I'm very interested in the whole search engine optimization field. I read about people getting links directed to their website. How do you get links to your site? Also, if you exchange links with someone, does that make the link less valuable?

Links exchange is a way to improve your page rank, not the SERP.
But to increase your PR, you need to find your link in a higher PR than yours.
It doesn't improve your SERP though, which is more important. For my keyphrase, my site is below other site with a lower PR, so that proves it doesn't change the SERP.

I can exchange a link with you if you'd like...

Be careful when doing link exchanges, Google has made it very clear they do not approve of this and you run the risk of getting a penalty.

    Default Linking

The key is really setting up quality links back to your site. There are so many "spammy" sorts of companies out there. Link only to relevent sites to yours.

    Default Inbound Links

look for sites with a lot of traffic (download alexa toolbar) and content similar to the site you are promoting (relevance).

This is a lot of talk about google penalizing. Think about this. If I have a competitor with good ranking, I could easily do all those things said to penalize them to hurt them. Not likely.

no it doesn't make less valuable but it's the other way around. It helps your site to improve it's ranking..

From other forums I've seen lots of discussion from SEO guru's who believe Google is beginning to place less weight on links that are reciprical; the idea being that essentially people are just trading links which doesn't improve the quality of a site it simply means a person is spending time trading links.
Looking for a realtor in Minnesota? How about a Missouri realtor in St. Louis or Kansas City? Agents Ranking researches the performance of thousands of real estate agents every year and hand selects the best realtors. You can also find information on Minneapolis Realtors at Minneapolisrealestates.com.

I am going to totally butcher the actual facts on this but I believe the idea to be spot on...

there was some kind of tech extravaganza where one of the google founders spoke.. and he was asked in Q&A something about if they keep changing algorithms how can the company that invested in SEO be SUCCESSFUL.

His answer was ...we don't care if you are successful...We care if you are RELEVANT

Think about what google and other search engines are trying to accomplish. They want the highest quality searches to get he most searchers.

Now mind you..there is LOTS of traffic out there on other engines/directories..disregarding it would be unwise. Their alogrithms are as sophisticated as google.

Here is my personal belief..I am charging you nothing for it and that is probably what it is worth

Any big time saving cheap trick (submitting to 1000 directories for a nickel, express submitters, reciprocal linking pages) its all kinda like steroids..you might get a quick result but it will not be lasting..

Link exchange helps your site to boost your page rank. Forums and blog commenting is also a good way.
