You know that everybody uses facebook and twitter thinking that they will increase their traffic. I think it really depends on what you are trying to sell. I don't agree that real estate is the type of business that you pickup off of either of those sites. It may however make your existing clients feel good that you are on there.

    Default What's your purpose?

Depends on your purpose. SEO and PR related stuff, DMOZ is good. Socializing and to make few money selling stuff, Facebook; Twitter is good to introduce new product too. And with new Google algorithm, a mention on Twitter is better than no mention at all.

In my opinion Facebook is one of the best social media site for getting targeted traffic for your site. It has millions of visitors and you can easily promote your service or product in front of lots of visitors and can lead traffic for your site.

The common choise of marketers are twitter and facebook in terms of SN marketing. The success of websites in this social network facebook and twitter doesn't just depend on ""which"" of the two you will use but ""what"" niche your website is. There are some niche of websites that doesn't make money at this social networks at all. Why? Because people don't get attracted to them or people will only look for them when they need it, compared to other products wherein even if people is not out to buy it, if they get interested, they'd buy it. Like a promo on a beach or something.

How other people find success with those social network though is by making them as contact references. Some people looks at websites and sometimes looks for an FB page or Twitter page to be able to contact the site easily - beats the heck out of having to wait for emails or something.
