MLS -- multiple listings service. This is the system that used by Realtors to work with listings. It is not a public system by itself because only Realtor could make changes in it.
IDX is an acronym for Internet Data Exchange. IDX is the process that converts the MLS listing database to a database that can be integrated within any website.

For MLS Realtors are paying yearly fees. For IDX -- there are mostly monthly fees depending on different payment plans.

Can anyone access the IDX database? I mean, do you need to be a real estate agent or have a license of any kind? If anyone can access it, does that mean anyone can add the data to their website? For example, if I have a website about living in XYZ City in XYZ state, can I display (in real time) homes for sell even though I am not an agent?

    Thanks.

You could see an IDX at site that I developed www.anitabergerrealtyinc.com. Try to search for Featured Properties or Completed Projects -- these are examples how IDX is working for you.
