    I am very reluctant accepting anyone who mass emails because they are most likely not very selective on who they link with and when I link to them after they may become penalized, I am in danger of facing the very same consequences.

    Too right! I limit my link exchange activities so that I don't burn out on the emails I send. I deliberately don't use templates and I try to show that I've visited the site and have some appreciation of it. Hopefully this shows that the email is genuine, etc.
