Political state of South/Central America
How secure is the political situation there now? With the Political state of South America at this time and the military build-up and threats by Venezuela Id be cautious about where I invested in that region.

Selecting a the best location where you would invest in one of the primary key to consider when investing. Location is one of the factors that affects great output(income) in real state investment, so the buyers are very strict yet considerate in places.

I would say Panama, it's the undiscovered pearl of Central America, well ... people are noticing it now. Great potential for the future and they have the US dollar there.
Anyway, it's my opinion, invest in Panama.
And I can remember something about fraudulent tree (hardwood?, palmtree?) investments in Costa Rica

Yes, many celebrities have invested in Costa Rica. The country has no army, and has had a very stable government for some time now. Voting for the next presidential elects takes place in only a couple weeks.
Send me a PM if you'd like to talk more, I would be happy to introduce you to this beautiful country if you do choose to come! Many great opportunities for investment in both residential and commercial, and I have much information I would love to share!

How is the health care there. This would probably be one of the most important things if I was going to buy property there.

Costa Rica Health Care
Public health insurance for citizens and residents. Medical procedures are significantly less than in the states, which has led to a niche 'medical tourism' industry (come get your operation, recover on the beach type-of-thing).
When you feel ill:Go to your local pharmacy.
Pharmacists help diagnose you, and you can purchase most drugs over the counter without a prescription.
If it looks more serious, they will forward you to one of the 10 major public hosptials or one of the many private clinic/hospitals.
My friend works at the private Hospital Cima in Escazu, San Jose... and it is QUITE the facility (the doctors also are the same ones that work at the public hospitals!)
