How to learn who owns a property or lot?
I'm not a realtor, but want to be able to find out who owns a house or lot. Would also like to learn assessed value, last purchase price, debt, etc.
What resources are out there to help one do this?
Thanks

The first you need to do is to get the full address of the property you are interested in. Then go to the local deed of registry to look up the deed of the house. Most of the time the deed also registers the name of the mortgage company and the insurance company. But before you go and inquire about the properties info, you first need to check if it is on the market. Some companies will never disclose the info of the property if it is still legally the property of a customer.

How To Locate Owner Information
Which county office holds the information you seek? It all depends on the state you are in. In Florida you can contact the Property Appraiser's office or query the records online. All you will need to know is the house number or the street name to query the records online. If contacting the office directly you will need the complete address. Every Florida county has a Property Appraiser's Office. The information held is: name of party in which the property is assessed, features of property i.e. assessed value/lot size/home size/address of property and that of party paying taxes/etc., etc.. In Georgia the same records are held by the Assessor's Office and they have a state website where the records can be searched. In Missouri same records are also at Assessor's Office but will have to look at county level and there is a lot less information available online. Wisconsin it's the Tax Collector's office in most counties.
If you are interested in gathering deed/lien/encumbrance information this information is also available but not at the Appraiser's or Assessors office. This information in Florida is held by the Clerk of Circuit Courts and you will need to query the Official Records, in most counties this can be done online. In Missouri and Wisconsin it's the Register of Deeds Office and there is little access outside of the court house.
Best bet is to run an online search for county offices. See which offices there are in the county which the property resides.

It would be better check the location first and ask for the neighbors. And internet is such a great way to check on houses that are for buy and sell.

The easiest way to get a public record is for you to go to the towns/counties Tax Assessors Office. Take note also that most counties these days have the information available online.
