Ice Melting Heat Tape Hints
If you have installed heat tape to prevent ice damming, the heat tape must be connected to ground fault protected circuits in order to avoid fatal electric shock.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends the heat tape be replaced if it is more than three years old to avoid a heightened fire risk. They would not recommend replacement if there was no reason for it.
Obtain and review the manufactures instructions for use of the heat tape and maintenance requirements to reduce fire and safety concerns.
Heat tape is usually not installed for no good reason. Ice damming is likely to have occurred in the past and it may still occur again in the future. Installation of an automatic device to activate the system is highly recommended. If you fail to turn on the heat tape prior to the start of precipitation it is not likely the heat tape will get hot enough to avoid problems.
