Fire Safety and Window Size
Modern fire egress or rescue requirements (minimum opening of 20" wide by 24" high, minimum opening of 5.7 square feet and within 44" of the floor) must exist in all modern bedrooms.
While not a requirement in most areas of the country to upgrade old windows when a home is bought or sold it is certainly a very good idea to upgrade all windows in bedrooms to ones that meet the minimum size requirements. Installation of windows that comply with modern requirements is recommended in order to avoid being trapped in the event of a fire or emergency.
If there is never a fire or an emergency the lack of egress windows may never become an issue. However we do not know in advance what problems will occur or when so the installation of larger windows should still be performed as quickly as possible.
Newer windows are large enough for not only you to get out but for a fireman with an air pack to fit through the window and rescue people.
