    Default Hand Rail Safety Rules

Missing and or defective hand rails cause many injuries each year. I do not know what is worse, no rail or one that you think is strong and safe but is not. In order to be considered adequate it is necessary for all handrails must be secure, continuously graspable and between 34" and 36" high and have vertical openings less than 4" wide.

Horizontal members that child could climb are unsafe in hand rails or guard rails. While a home can have defective hand rails and guard rails for years without incident serious injury can occur at any time. Adding guard rails is easy, not very expensive and it can avoid serious injury.
