Eliminate RealEstate Taxes in Florida
They were talking about eliminating realestate taxes in Florida and just increasing the sales tax from 6% to 8%. I thought this was a great idea. What ever happened to this?

Yea,
I was wondering the same thing. Well it appears that the govenor, and state elected officials decided to scrap that idea.
It actually would never have removed ALL property taxes. We would still have school and village taxes. The problem was how to disburse the funds equitably between the counties. Which they could not come to concensus.
Nobody could figure it out and so it was canned.
I loved the idea. Property owners bear the burden of paying the taxes for all citizens. it is easy to raise property taxes, beacuse the property appraiser can make adjustments that favor the government and create more revenue.
On sales tax, it cannot be controlled. The government can't force you to buy stuff so they can get more tax revenue.
In November, vote for the "super exemption". Although I will probably stick with my standard Homestead, many people who purchased during the boom, will get some relief.
On another note. I was finally able to get my Homeowners Insurance under control. It went from $1700 in 04 to $3,600 in 06 to $2,400 in early 07. Now I found a better company with more insurance and I'm paying $911.00 year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a 4/3/2 in a planned community, no pool.

We are currently fighting a nightmare regarding property taxes in Indiana. One property owner paid all $12,000 of his taxes in $1 bills to show his disgust.
Our local Association is having a press conference this week regarding their new proposed solutions which I just wrote about in my Indiana Real Estate Blog.

Florida RealEstate Taxes
Hey,
Thanks for the info guys.
I am interested in what insurance company you went with? I would be interested in checking it out.
Wow, Indiana sounds like they have the same problems Florida is having.
I think Sales Tax is the most fair. People who buy the most stuff pay the most sales tax.
If they significantly reduced the RealEstate Taxes by at least 50% it would really spur investment which is stagnant here right now. Someone needs to wake up and see it isn't the mortgage payments that are killing people it is the payment plus the huge realestate taxes and insurance.

We saved a TON of money using St. Johns Insurance. Not that I am endorsing them, we have not had to put in any claims yet... LOL
My agent turned me on to them after we got hit with rates that exceeded $3,600 per year. Now we pay $911.00 for more coverage. Unbelievable.
I'm a bit PO'ed at the agent, since I have referred her about 100 clients, and I have not even gotten a freakin gift basket. I'm going to get my insurance license and sell it on my own and retire.

In coastal areas of Galveston Texas, the inurance rates have gone up... not too bad, but some. I pay 2300 for homeowners, windstorm, and flood... on a value of 200,000. Lucklily my house is behind the seawall and so it saves me about 1000/yr. Our taxes are right at 3% or 6000 for a 200,000 house... However I only pay tax on the county appraisal of 100,000 or 3,000... so a total of 5300/yr or $441/mo! thats a lot... but I love Island life!

Super Exemption?
I am not sure what the super exemption is or what it is about. I am really disgusted with the little action I am seeing in our state though about the realestate taxes and insurance.
We need change to spur the realestate market again.

Real Estate taxes are really one of the most insidious form of tax known, not only because they harm those who buy and sell real estate for a living (like many people on this forum), but because they perpetuate the illusion that you owning the property is contingent on paying a form of 'rent' on it to the State.
But yet a lot of states get along fine without it. Which brings me to my point in this post.
What should be done, IMO, is that those people who posted about being interested in opposing the real estate/property taxes in their own state should look into the states where people succeeded in abolishing those taxes and try and find out how it was done there.

Isn't there a new vote coming up dealing with property taxes in Florida? Does anyone know about this?
