The best way to seo your website is by link bait, write a very controversial article that can't be proved wrong by anyone; something like a rumor would be great.
A great example of linkbait is shoemoney starting the rumor about "Dmoz being sold to botw.org" this got him loads of links on webmaster blogs and forums. Linkbait is natural and incontent which means that you will be getting the most out of each link.

Video
I think the "newest" thing is video. Google has publicly acknowledged that they give preferential treatment to videos.
Search for "buy cheap viagra" on google, and you'll almost always see a video that is no older than a day old in the top 10 spots. If a site can get top 10 placement within a day in a hyper-competitive market like that, I think that's a pretty strong sign...

Buoyancy
The way SEO use to work is that it would distribute pageranks from the top down. For example, if you get tons of inbound links to your homepage, search engines (Google specifically) would automatically flow that pagerank down to your subpages.
So all you had to do was get a ton of links to your top level and voila, every single page of your website would get ranked.
Not so anymore...
The algorithms have changed such that SE look at the inbound links to you subpages. The subpages would get ranking over time and THAT collectively help "float" your overall ranking on your homepage. Their reasoning is that the "meat" your site lies within your website anyway and not on the homepage.
The bottom line is, when you are getting inbound links, think about how you can get links to your SUB pages and not just to your homepage.

How exactly do u get links to your home page? i mean u dont have excess to every homepage ... Can u also ask people for the allowence of puting your link on their page!? Or maybe pay them something ...
And how many links are necessary to be ranked "good"?

Several Ways...
On the very rudimentary level (and this is what Google prefers), you get links by posting darn good content that people cast "human votes" for them via linking to them by their own free will.
Better yet, they spread that around to the world wide web for others to check out (i.e. they Digg it, StumbleUpon it, share it on Squidoo, etc.)
Help facilitate this by making it easy for people to accomplish this (i.e. at sharethis.com).
You also get backlinks by participating in social community sites such as Squidoo and forums like this (assuming it doesn't have "nofollow" tags). Just be wary that Google is on the lookout now for these artifical links, i.e. they are looking for those that are on social networks ONLY to take advantage of the backlinks they can generate themselves.
You can also look at services such as get3waylinks.com which gives you 1 way links.
Just remember, 1 way links FAR outweigh reciprocal links.
As for how many backlinks you "need"? That depends on the keyterm you are trying to rank for and the amount (and quality) of competition for that keyterm.
Hope that helps
