Yes, it works but you need to do a lot of work to make it profitable. You must do split testing and do keyword research to find profitable keywords with low competitiom to go along with the big name ones. Remember to not over bid and make sure you have enough money to start with that you can recieve the education it takes to be profitable.

Google AdWords works if you know what you're doing
It takes a lot of analyzing data, research and trial and error!

They can work if you use the right keywords to attract people to your site. But the more popluar the keyword is, the more competition there is for that keyword and the more it will cost you.

Google Ads Work
Yes Google Ads work.
Here is a trick we use to make sure we don't burn through a lot of cash with new ads, and it allows us to test a variety of ads cheaply.
Create your campaign Ads, but limit them to a single metro area.
Then limit the ad to run for 2-3 hours each day.
Play around with the timing of the ad (days and hours) to discover when you are getting the best click through rate.
By creating a variety of campaigns/ads and using a variety of keywords, you should be able to test and discover what ads and combinations work best.
Best of all, you won't burn through your budget quickly, and you'll have the opportunity to do a lot of testing.SearchTheJungle.com

My argument on this is that if you are going to do a lot of work why not do SEO? Once you rank well (assuming having chosen good keywords - but you need to do that on PPC as well) and keep the monent for ranking, it pays for itself. Studies show the end users are more apt to click on organic SERPs than sponsored as well.

Search through Google's Adwords docs
It tells you that SEO (Organic listings) get a higher click through rate at about an average of 20% where PPC get maybe 10% if you're lucky...
I personally do SEO for many companies and it has the best ROI out of all internet marketing channels.
Hope this helps!Jonathan Carey

Google Quality Score
If you want to use PPC it will help, but it is not an "either or" between SEO (organic listings) or Pay Per Click(PPC). If your site is a quality site (meaning you are using good SEO techniques - quality content, good backlinks, good site structure)), your PPC costs actually go down.
Using good SEO will get you good traffic and can reduce your costs if you decide to use PPC. Good luck
