First Few Months??
Ok- this is my first post and I have a question that I have been wondering about....
Let's say that you have just completed your test and you have your Real Esate license and you go to apply for a job as an agent. What are the first few months like?? In other words, do you start right off the bat trying to sell homes or do they wait a little bit before you get your first listing. How does this generally work? Any and all insights much appreciated.
Thanks

Well...it's not a job. Unless you plan on working as a leasing consultant for a prop mgmt company, or a sales agent with a builder or something.
It's a business.
When you pick the broker you want to hang your license with you will determine in part your beginning path. Meaning, different brokers have different expectations, training methods, etc. You may be expected to attend weekly sales meetings and spend so much time per week on floor duty. Or you could have a completely hands-off broker. Depends.
But if you proceed as a residential real estate agent, don't expect leads to be handed to you. You have to chase 'em down yourself. That means working your sphere of influence. Networking. Deciding how you plan to conduct your business, market to your your targeted prospects and so on.

It depends. In some places, you'll sit for nothing untill you apply at Mc Donalds because no checks are coming in. In others, you'll be trained and do stuff for others and usually for free.
So unless you have a member of your family selling and listing with you, or buying with you, expect your first check between the 6th and the 9th month. That's average.
My advice: the first day, go knock on door physically and ask people if they want to sell or to buy a property. Do it 1000 times and you'll get 1 listing...and so on...There is no secret...

first steps
Contact EVERYONE you know and let them know you are now a Realtor. Here is what I would tell them in nutshell.
"Hey, I'm new at this but since were already friends you know you can trust me. Also, since I don't have alot of deals right now, I will be able to give your project (buying or selling) tons of my personal attention. Also, I have a very good broker (assuming you get a good one) who will help me with the things that I may not be experienced enough to handle."Michael Reilly, Owner/Broker

Fsbo
what did you mean by the Four words, for sale by owner? are you suggesting that he call FSBO's and try to get listings. If so, I would agree that's a good place to start but you are probably going to have offer discounted listing fees
