Thread: I am interested in gettng my real estate license

Typically you will need college courses in, Real Estate Principles and Practice, Real Estate Law, Real Estate Valuation, Real Estate Finance, Real Estate Specialty Fields, course work in economics, and book keeping.

These are the norms for just about any Real Estate Commision across the country. The courses you take must be a total of 10 semestar credit hours and you will be set.

How long does it normally take to get a real estate license, assuming one is devoted entirely to the courses? Like how long from the start of the first course to the time you take the final exam?

The time it takes all depends on the avenue you use to acquire your educational requirements and how quick of a study you are. I would say that it takes around 4 weeks to get your license once you have completed all educational requirements. As for the time line for completeting your educational requirements if you take college courses it will take you at minimium one semester. If you choose to take classes designed to meet the Real Estate Commission's requirements it will take less time.

If you can find an online real estate course provider that is approved by the commission then you can complete it in as little as 2 weeks. But this would be an intense schedule to keep as it is the route I followed when I first got licensed.

I would recommend three courses of action.

First, walk into three or four real estate offices and ask to talk the the office manager or broker. You may or may not need to set up an appointment. MANY office managers are eager to speak with potential candidates/recruits on the spur of the moment. Most brokers are very knowledgeable about the local requirements for licensing and most offices will have a prepared package explaining how to become licensed in your state. In addition, they normally will recommend their preferred schools to take your licensing classes. Some large brokers even offer licensing classes in house. Be cautious about brokers who offer to 'reimburse' your tuition. That's mainly a gimmick... and many new agents never see a dime of that. Expect to pay for your coursework out of your own pocket.

Second, go online and find your state's Real Estate Commission web site. Most states publish the detailed requirements for obtaining salesperson and broker licenses. They'll provide a list of required 'core' classes as well as the number of electives you'll need. They'll also explain what credit you may receive for previous college work (not necessarily directly real estate related.) More important, they'll explain the general requirements for licensing other than coursework. For instance, if you've ever been convicted of a felony involving fraud, you may not be eligible. Read all of this information carefully.

Finally, if you have any questions, CALL your state Real Estate Commission directly and talk to the staff. They are usually very helpful.

The greatest thing you can do it create a website in a related topic. I have a probate and estate settlement site that gives me thousand of visitors a month to prospect from.

Forget the old ways... that most Realtors recommend to you. (in most cases they are struggling too)

I will get over a quarter million page view a year. How do you like those apples?

look into probate marketing (target marketing and great timing)
