old homes
A friend of mine has been trying to sell a couple of homes who have been built in the 40's, 50's and 60's. It has been a bit of a headache because these houses have some serious damage due to age, neglect and due natural disasters. Some are also built in ways that today would not be acceptable(asbestos lining, pipes that easily leak). In your opinion what would be the biggest trouble with old houses?

I think you already hit on the biggest trouble with old houses. Old houses were built in a time when there were far less regulations and agencies to respond to. Asbestos, lead-based paint, rust, and all the other problems that come with a house that is 60+ years old can create more than a few headaches. In other words, the biggest problem with old houses is that.... they are old!

I agree that it is a problem to sell an old house unless you do a great repair and provide the house with all modern conveneniences that are necessary. I know that in some counties it is impossible to get a mortgage if the house is 50 years or more.

Opportunity!
Sure there are headaches but historical houses are popular if all the safety issues are brought up to code. Some people love the character of older architecture. Either buy it and remodel with an eye on preservation or sell with a gentrification/historical opportunity spin.
Good Luck!

Historical houses are like antique collections. In time, their value become high especially when they have features that are sought after by collectors or those who love past architectural designs. With a little remodeling to address those problems but retaining the structure and the value, there would surely be much opportunity that would come your way.
