Cost of installing a door
Found out that the grading for our new home will permit a door to be installed from the garage to the laundry room. The builder wants $1,585 to put one in.
I'm annoyed as they had promised to rough in the door if grading allowed for a door. It was never put in the contract. This has come to haunt me as they are now saying they will either install the door in its entirety or leave the wall as is, with no rough in.
My wife very much wants this door (as do I) and just wants to pay the builders and have it ready for us upon closing. How much, if any, could I save if I were to have the door installed after closing? Is $1,585 a lot for a builder to charge?

This price seems high. I have a handy-man in my area that charges $500 to install a "man-door" from the garage to the exterior of the home. I dont think that going from the garage to the interior of the home would be much more.
I would call some local handy-man/remodelling companies and get some quotes. Just make sure the builder isnt placing anything important in the wall that you are wanting to take down (electrical, plumbing or HVAC).
Best of luck!

So this is for the builder of your home? That sounds outrageously high and I wouldn't agree to it unless I was in desperate circumstances. Best of luck and update.

That sounds way too high. I wonder, do you know anyone who could possibly do it for you? I'm sure you can find someone cheaper than that.

Definitely try to find something cheaper!! Over $1000 for a door! As it has been said it is not an exterior door it is going from a garage to the house. You will 100% be able to find someone who will do it for chaper than that..
I would recommend the papers for finding a local carpenter who will be able to do it for you and will probably cost you much much less.

This price sounds very high.. You can get people who can do this at cheaper prices.. Spending $1500 for a door, I would never recommend that..

Check around
I agree that does sound high, but a contractor always seems to be. I would check around on the web or yellow pages and try to find someone cheaper or maybe a friend of a friend if possible.

Assuming that there's no exterior siding on either side of the door you can get it done for a LOT cheaper then that.
You can get an interior door for like 30 bucks. The process is extremely simple too- cut the drywall on both sides slightly larger then the opening, cut the studs to make a hole that matches the drywall, screw new 2x4's in a box shape where you want the door, hang the door, install the trim.
I'd guess you could find a random handyman to do the whole job for like 200 dollars. Even if it's more then that, almost 1600 is simply rediculous.Joint Base Real Estate

That sounds like a very high estimate. Call around to a couple of contractors in your area and they will be able to give you a ballpark estimate if you choose to have it installed after closing.
