Aspiring Agent not sure of Location?
Hi all, I'm an aspiring real estate agent. I went into college without knowing what I wanted to do, but after some research and what not over the past year I've decided I'd like to pursue a career in Real Estate. I'm 1 semester away from graduating with an Associates Degree. The only uncertainty I have is whether or not I'd like to become an Agent in the City I've lived in for my entire life. My question being is it a bad idea to start in a new city, and does this typically occur? Any help would be appreciated.

How to understand a neighborhood
They best way to understand a neighborhood is to go there. Get a feel for it. Eat a local restaurants, take walks down the street and more importantly discuss the neighborhood with locals.
As an agent, you add the most value when you know the location. As they say, location, location, location. There really is not way around. That.
I wish you the best.

Thanks for the advice on research. With that said, do you mind me asking if you have always been based in Seattle?

you can begin your real estate career in any city as long as you do your research. depending on type of career you are pursueing....I have my agents both sales and rentals tour neighborhoods, go to locator party functions, and familiarize themselves with any new construction properties in the area. As long as you are giving 150%, you can't loose....

I live in Buffalo, NY. There's a general negativity among people here. It's a very mediocre area and if you strive to be anything other than mediocre people laugh at you and think you're nuts. I realize that the knowledge I've gathered and first hand experience gained thus far would be a great asset to provide buyers, however, I don't feel like I'd want to sell in an area I don't whole heartedly recommend to buyers and find that rather hypocritical. I don't mind doing the research and I'm very interested in the field of real estate and it seems like work I could pour my heart into. So, the extra work wouldn't seem like work to me, as you said in another post. Thank you everyone for the great advice, it's appreciated.

It doesn't matter where you go there's going to be negative people. If I were you I'd stay right where you are only because you have a step up as far as knowing the area and people you already associate yourself with. If you go somewhere else you will have to relearn the area and meet people all over again.
