    Default Compensation: What's fair?

    Need advice on a situation.

I live in a high rise apt.

    It has 7 Floors
There are two apts on each floor.
Superb location, rent is 2800 for a 2bdr.

We have a excellent view of downtown.

Our neighbors are asking us to move down one floor, where the view is compromised and the apt needs renovation to get up to speed with our current place.

They're asking us so family and helpers can move into our place...so it's not anything we've done.

What's fair compensation for the inconvenience of having to move?

We've been offered 1 mos free rent and the cost of moving...

Doesn't feel like a fair deal for the inconvenience of having to tear down our current set up and start over again. Moving is the worst and we just did it 5 mos ago.

It all depends on specifics but wondering if there was any precedent on such an issue.

Let me know your thoughts thanks.

You need to read your lease, then let us know what your terms are so we may answer the question. There are some statutory renters rights in most jurisdictions that may help in conjunction with those terms in the lease.

Otherwise, google renter's rights for Boston & some not for profit orgs should pop up that can give you more guidance specific to your area.

Thanks for the guidance. We do have free mediation service here. I've made a few calls.

This is a difficult situation, anyone willing to share an opinion of number?

    I appreciate all the help.

    Thanks,

    Smile Your situation

I don't understand why you have to move at all. It seems if it is for the convenience of the neighbor, the neighbor should have to pay your rent for the entire time you are inconvenienced.

Does your neighbor own the building and are they your landlords? If not, why do they have the right to ask you to move at all? Let their family move in the downstairs apt.

If there are details you do not wish to share, that's ok. I would think that for the term of time you need to move (hopefully you will be able to move back at some later date) that they should pay a portion of your rent for compensation and also pay for the cost of the move. Moving isn't free!
