contractor took down an unit without the new zoning information
Is the contractor legally responsible for lost value of the property and additional cost incurred when he demolished 1 of 2 units without realizing the zoning had changed to 1?
2 Unit Property had a zoning change to 1 unit back in 1995. Before checking with the city, contractor demolished too much of the house to be called a remodel, and because of zoning change, the unit cannot be rebuilt. The only viable solution was to extend from the existing unit forward, the new design can only be one unit. This resulted in lost of a 400 sq ft garage and lost of square footage of the house.

without proper legal aguidence regarding your very specific case you are basically bound to get stuck with mesleading advice - from expirience, it is worth the legal fee - it will be cheaper than the aggrivation caused by not being protected...

That's why I always watch and manage any one and every one very closely that works on any of my properties. If for some reason I can't be there, I'll have my tenant watch them as closely as possible. Too many times people do what they want without thinking of the consequences.
Sorry about your loss...
