Lightbulb Front page on highly competitive keywords

I am trying to get on the front page of organic searches. Brentwoodhomesusa.com has links on many high profile sites, but do those links need to have the keyword i want in them?

Any other advice would be very much appreciated

Yes, most definitely they need to have the keyword in them. This is referred to as 'anchor text'.

Anchor text is one of the key factors in how google determines your SERP (Search Engine Results Page), for specific keywords, or keyword combinations.

As well as using these keywords as the pointer to your site, also make sure you use the same keywords as internal links in your home page and other pages on your site.

Anchor text is critical, but change it around when building links. Austin real estate, Austin homes, homes in Austin - these kinds of variations are very good.

Very good point Austin. You do need to change the anchor text around just to give it a little variation now and then, otherwise search engines can and will catch on that it artificial and most likely done by a search engine optimisation consultant for pure seo benefits

You should be using anchor text that is relevant to your site...

Definitaly have it relevant to the page that is points at, but if you have the same anchor text for every link to a page it can look artificial to spiders. It is good to mix it around just a little, eg, Philippine real estate, Real estate Philippines etc.

Anchor text represent your site. When bots crawl your anchor text, they will have a knowledge of what is your site is all about. Then, it would bump of to search engine results.

the reason others are telling you to mix up your anchor text, is that google has a filter. If ALL of the anchor text pointing to your homepage is exactly the same, Google smells foul play and could penalize your site.
