Content.... is the King...
Do your onpage optimization wisely, without any stuffing.
And than go for offpage.
I really believe PR still major factor on getting good rank for the targeted keywords.
You just need to concentrate on getting good back links, and get good pr.
Mean while this do classifieds submissions, social book marking, forum posting, blog comment posting this will generate links in short time, and once links are going to increasing and increasing with the proper anchor text for your blog, you will get good rank.
Those people are completely wrong who think dirs. has no value. do free directory submissions in quality directories. it will help you...

Hi,
First your site needs a rigorous back linking campaign.. right now your site has some 22-25 back links all from sitepoint Forum ( no idea what that is ) .
You Home page is still not is still no cached by google. You need to Find some top keyword you need to Target and increase the keyword density on your hpme page ... I understand you have a lot of images on the home page .. That's not a issue make use of HTML tags <Img Alt="You keyword Prazes Here"> and <url Title="Your Keywords here"> make it look organic .. don't stuff keywords.... Use H1 and H2 tags as well if poible .. and whever a keyword comes in the text try to ise <strong>Keyword</stron> tag... some of these changes would not be visible anywhere on your site however the Search Engine Spiders would be able to see it.
So work on these 2 things right now... and be patient it would not happen in one day or two days. or one week or two weeks .. might take more time
1 back linking
2. Keyword density on your Home page
let me know if you require any help .. Good Luck
Peace

Echoing others recommendations:
Good & original content is king. And then get the feed to that information distributed (digg, sphinn, etc).
If its really good - you'll generate enough visits (and links to your site) that your server may melt down.

Hi Copybuild,
Things are changing rapidly with Google, one of the main things that I see which is becoming increasingly important is the theme of your site. Remember Google has human reviewers that reviews sites which they provide different scores that also effect your page rank. It is better to get links from sites that are highly related that are authority sites than sites that are not. I hope that helps.

Is it worth buying backlinks? Do they help or hurt with pagerank?
