    Default 3-way Link Exchange

I am running a site. While doing reciprocal link exchange, I sent a link exchange request to another site. The webmaster of that site placed my link on some other site as a 3-way link exchange process. He said to me that new google algorithm does not consider reciprocal link exchange.

Is it true? Does reciprocal link exchange have any more importance?

PubCon is in early December in Las Vegas. All anyone has to do is go to that conference or any SES, SMX, or PubCon -- and you will hear panel members tell you what's what. Three-way links are no more special than two-way links.

    Default Does 3 way work?

Do 3 way link exchanges work? Or is it just a question of time before Google catches up with this as well?

It is detectable by google. You would need to go much deeper than just 3 way to avoid detection (how much deeper, is anyone's guess).

The simple story is that google considers all types of links, but only quality links, whether they are reciprocal or 3-way.

Google knows exactly what sites are doing with their links. A few years ago at SES Google demonstrated their link tracking capabilities. I even think that it was Matt Cutt's that gave the demonstration.

Anyway, people in the audience were asked to give their domain URL. Matt popped the URL in his handy little program, and within a few seconds was able to see all of the links pointing to the site including reciprocal links, three way links, one way links, paid links, and more. Very scary.

But if you think about it, tracing links is like playing 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

The key to any link program is linking smart - not just linking for the sake of building links. The themes of both the sites and pages of links that point to your site are of primary importance. The problem today is that almost everyone gets hung up on that stupid toolbar PR when making link decisions. And that's why these people have a bajillion links and crappy rankings.

When you build links, turn off your Google toolbar. Take your own definition of a quality site (sans toolbar PR) and get links from those sites that you find are interesting and have quality content that dovetails with the theme of yor own site. Then get a link from those sites with either a one-way link, recip link, or paid link. Those are the best secondary links for your web site.

For primary links, seek out authority web sites. For these, think TrustRank and not PageRank.

Just remember, link building is a tedious and thankless task. You will be lucky to get a handful of links for every 100 sites you visit.
