    Default Penguin update

The forums are strangely quiet ( with the exception of the SEO ones) regarding the impact of Google's Penguin update on 24 April. I may have missed it, but I can't see any reference to it here.
Hasn't it had any impact on anyone, or are they just trying to make sense of it? To be honest, I was clobbered, and I don't yet know why. I had done really well throughout the Panda updates, but on 25 April many of my keywords were nowhere. Funnily enough, the day before it hit I recorded more Page 1 results than ever previously.

In the aftermath I have done some tough analysis of my site but honestly have found little that could have triggered the hit taken ( I hadn't received one of the "unnatural links" emails from Google). So I re-wrote my home page, changed some alt tags, and submitted for re-consideration.
I haven't paid for any links, I haven't comment spammed (well maybe a couple of edu's), I don't do articles (spun or otherwise). My content is all my own. I've read everything going but still don't understand what it is all about.

If you haven't been hit then congratulations and if I was you ? would be feeling pretty good right now. I am sure many sites have rightfully been removed but there are many instances that seem unfair.

If you have been hit, do you know why, and what have you done (if anything) to try to get back?

Well for me Idk if i been hit or not since my website is 3.5 months old. though i didn't see any dramatic drops in my main keywords i did see a drop from 2nd page of 12th rank to 17th (not pages). But i have seen gains on a lot of other keywords and on some losses but i dont think it's due to the updates bc of how new my website still is.

It is too soon to make any changes to your website. The changes you made make might you look like you think you are guilty. They might be watching for this.

Everything is still speculation and it will take some time to figure out what the changes were.

I have a new site with nothing but article links and it is still moving up in the ranks and my competition is still as strong as before and they rely heavily on paid links. I don't believe they will penalize a site for unnatural links. If they did, anybody could take down their competition with unnatural links. The forums I checked out sounded like it hit affiliate sites the hardest. Remember, these seo gurus make their money from affiliate links.

Don't listen to anybody who tells you what happened in the update as they don't know just yet.

Altinkum, one thing to consider is you have a real estate website but all of your forum links are in the seo sections. This is unnatural and even I suspected you of being a spammer. If you look around, you won't see me in these forums much, and you won't ever see me in a thread about links. even writing this word makes me nervous.

Yes, it is something I am aware of. In fact I am active on a number of specialist SEO forums and am a moderator on one, and last week I deleted my signatures from virtually all of them. I had previously received a comment from Admin regarding the fact that nearly all of my postings on this forum are in the SEO categories, but I explained that most of this forum is US related and if I were to comment in other sections then I would be spamming because I have no relevant knowledge or experience to share.

If a site has been hit, then according to penguin it is already guilty of something. When I checked on Friday, I had started to recover on 12 keywords, and to be honest waiting isn't really an option as this is potentially our busiest time of the year and two weeks have gone by already.
What is interesting is that the words that have begun to appear again in searches are all related to the name of my town. Those that are still outside of the top 100 are all related to the country.

The Penguin update had actually hit many websites, especially (or most of what I have seen) are ecommerce websites and probably corporate websites. Though your website is not yet hit, as well as mine - you still have to keep track of your website. That's actually a good idea that you updated already your website before the update hits yours.

All we can do is to keep up with it, and of course, play more strategically.

Yes it was - to quote myself "To be honest, I was clobbered"
If I hadn't been, it would just be business as usual. But I don't know whether it is because of anything I have done, or because there have been further updates, but the recovery is continuing.

Sorry .. that's also meant for others who were not yet hit. Anyway .. There's a lot of speculation going on.

I only recently realised that it is isn't going to be apparent whether anything done to try to recover from Penguin has been effective until Google refreshes it. I had wrongly thought that it was an ongoing part of the algorithms but it isn't, like Panda Google will push the button on it from time to time.

Guys... Penguin is good for anyone out to make money by being honest. What will succeed, now, is - rather than being a geek in front of a PC, learning formulas - writing about things in an honest, value giving way. It's as simple as that; google have grown tired of people bs:ing.
