Both have different search algorithms, For Yahoo, Onpage seo is a very big factor but google doesn't give much weightage to onpage optimization

Both search engines are working for the same purpose that is providing good search results to their users. Therefore both engines work on different algorithms to cater the requirements of the searchers.

Google has about 60 times more search share than Yahoo. Focus your attention on Google.

    Default Google

I would agree to focus your search on Google, if you are trying to get the most traffic. Perhaps researching relevant keywords to us in addition to the ones you have now would help too...

Percentages are being given that reflect Google’s market share, but the remaining percentage of a very large market is still a considerable number of people and to want to make sure of reaching them as well seems a very sensible idea.
The SE’s are completely free to use what criteria they want to in order decide the ranking order, and although they are largely the same amongst the main players there are differences that may mean a site appearing in a different place in the ranking order on a different SE. If you want to know what the specific differences in criteria (i.e. their algorithms) are then no-one can tell you that for sure but each provides guidance notes that can help optimize for that SE.
But you should be wary of optimizing for another SE at the possible expense of your Google ranking.
I wonder how much of a difference in ranking you are talking about? Is it just a few places or are they pages apart?

    Default what i think happened

from a historical point of view, yahoo before the emerging of google as a new power house , use to dominate the Internet , then google came along with different ideas & projects , and they become The search engine loved by the world . i thought this was going to become a 2 horse race when Microsoft tried to buy yahoo but that didnt happened .

    Default Google vs. Yahoo

Since the two search engines have different algorithm, the rankings are going to differ. Google used to concentrate more on the content, keywords and description, where as Yahoo focused more on keywords in the URL. It seems that now the search engines are starting to focus on the amount the website is used. This is going to constantly be changing though. SO, the main difference is that Google sees the desciption and Yahoo sees all key words.

Well, the difference is on how they serve their OWN search results to online users as well as how they provide efficient information to their users.
