Related Website BackLinks

Hey All,

In regard to backlinks, does anyone have any theories on how Google defines if a site linking to you is related to you.

Eg, If I have a site about Golf, and I get a backlink from a site about Golf advice and then one link from a nappy supplier (it could happen), how does it decide that the Golf advice link is related and thus worth more? Is it just a keyword match, content match, looking at the META's?

All thoughts appreciated.

Google simply looks at the page's content, keyword, titles ect. and compares them against the content, keywords, titles on the page pointed to by the link.

Don't worry about links from unrelated sites. They will not hurt your site, they just will not help it (at least not much).

that's what i hear anyway. So I always look for either local sites or sites about real estate. But i won't turn down a link from anyone, haha

When you link on related websites, of course Google will know what you are offering for, as well as it defines you as a relevant website to those related websites as well .

Links from other sites with relevant topics do have more weight.

Does anyone use the link syndication methods at all? Any suggestions?

I think that the relevancy discussion is similar to the nofollow/dofollow one in that it is probably best to have a mixture of links, but with the emphasis on the relevant ones. But for example, who doesn't chase links from very high PR sites regardless of whether they are relevant?
