Google AdSense does work. However, you have to have a lot of eyeballs in order for it to pay off. Plus, if you think really hard about it, when do users click on ads? Do you ever click on ads? Usually, the answer to this is not really. But some do. Why?
Because they found the website, but it doesn't have what they need. Instead, the ad that shows up on the website does answer their need. Only then will they click through the ad to get what they wanted in the first place. Thinking about this some more, this means your website must be good at generating traffic, but provide less information to make the ads more appealing. Something very hard to do.
I believe websites that survive on ads do it based not on pay-per-click, but on pay-per-view. If you generate enough eyeballs, you now have leverage to get advertisers to pay you to just put their ads up on your site. The Million Dollar Home Page is an excellent example of this.
Plus, AdSense holds your cheque until you reach a certain dollar amount. So if you make a few bucks a day, it'll be a while until you get any cash. Not to say that they don't pay out, but don't hold your breath unless you're already big or have figured out a way to "trick" people to click on the ads (in which case, please PM me
