Google Pod Theory
Over the past months, I've noticed that our rank on individual search terms can vary pretty wildly.
Literally from #1 overall, to not showing up at all (on the same search term)... then a couple weeks later, we find ourselves back at #1.
I have a theory on why this happens, that I'd like to share, and then hopefully get back some comment from the community.
My theory on this is that Google's operates using a number of independent clusters of computers (pods), and these pods will scan websites daily... but operate essentially independently. When someone enters a search request, the pod that handles the request is random.
If it's a pod that has scanned you recently, then you're likely to appear higher in the search results. If it's a pod that hasn't scanned you, then you may not even appear at all.
Over time, each of the pod is likely to visit you... resulting in more level search results for established websites.
I'd be interested in hearing other peoples thoughts on this.

Millions of sites daily
You may be right, but Google scans millions of sites daily. and on a website like ours they'll scan thousands of pages every day.
The sheer volume of data collected on a daily basis by Google would likely be in the terrabytes, which could make constant synchronization a very difficult task.
Having said that, Google is undeniably brilliant, so you may be correct.
