Duplicate content MYTH
Hello All, I saw the thread about duplicate content and I just had to start another one to help set everyone straight.
Problem with these forums is there is a lot of BAD information especially when it comes to SEO. People that are not SEO's should not make comments about SEO..
(says my SEO guy who is sitting right here showing me how to use a forum)
Duplicate content is not a bad thing. If your entire site is duplicated Google will file 13 the site if feels it is secondary. Meaning it will not come up in search results.
Now I am going to give you a very simple example that Realtors can understand as to why I am right...
If you have a website that sits on it's own database that holds and updates your local MLS feed... evey single MLS listing is a new page of content if your web developer did his job right.
My site has 13,000 indexed pages which makes it an authority site.
Now if you know who the #1 sites are in your local search area, chances are pretty good they are sites built that store their own IDX rather than host garbage IDX in a can which has no content/SEO value.
Now if duplicate content was an issue, all these sites that host their own IDX would explode and be gone...
But they dont, they are #1 because of the amount of content they contain.... Because with Google, content is KING.
You are not going to get file13'd unless everything you did on your site is duplicate. If you do copy content from another site, that content will not be indexed and therefore it will be worthless....
Another example... AP news
AP news is duplicated everywhere on the internet by all the newspapers but their sites still rank!!!
Come on people, use a little common sense here, stop chasing your tail.
If there is a reason to have duplicate content fine, use it. If you are doing it to "steal" it then you are going to have problems from the content owner... because ALL duplicate content can be found on the internet...
Do a search for "copyscape" and you will find a tool that will show you if your content has been duplicated or remind you where you stole your content from.

Google Panda is very active these days , so try to avoid duplicate content otherwise your site will be penalze, many of the authority sites drop in ranking already.

i really like the way the guy ended his talk use duplicate content where you think its necessary and thats the key.
Duplicate content is not sin but using too much will hurt you so use it where you think its important or else use unique and quality content.
I smell Panda? did somebody really said Panda? well to be honest panda didnt have anything to do with duplicate content but if you have a shady unique content then you will probably the victom of panda as panda was there to kick the low quality or thin content and duplicate content theory is slightly different from it. dupicate content does not means copy paste of the entire website that is known as scraping...

Would you say there is an issue with having an article on your site that you republished from ezine articles? As required, I do include the writer's original link.
What's to come of republishing people's articles if google is going to ignore it any way? It seems to me that even if it doesn't hurt you, it doesn't add value to your site (in google's eyes) so will people continue to do it?
