I would suggest creating more specific keywords for YOUR market. If you're in Dallas, how about "Dallas Real Estate" and all it's permutations? Seems to me that people looking for real estate in Dallas would search for "Dallas real estate" or "Dallas homes for sale", don't you think?

Most of the keywords we target are "municipality stateabbreviation homes" or "municipality homes for sale".
Usually if you can target the last keyword mentioned, you'll hit for "municipality homes" and "homes for sale municipality".

When picking out keywords, choose the relative ones, the words that would define your company and service.

it won't ruin seo, you will still have PR, just not a lot of visitors to your site. The key is to find kw that has a lot of searches otherwise you're ranking for #1 on a keyword that gets 5 over all searches a day like a friend of mine, who brags about having a number 1 ranking on Google.

You need to figure out what your real estate niche is and actually go after ranking for terms that are even possible to get page one for. Some keywords will take years and thousands of dollars to rank for.

I agree with junosama. If you're new, broad keywords like "real estate" will take more time, money and manpower than you've got. And bigger boys will always outrank you. Go for low-hanging fruit, ie long-tail keywords, eg
"real estate in crapville, timbuktu" rather than just "real estate"
Aaron Wall at seo book (dot) com's got a good keyword tool. But Google's adwords keyword tool is good too.
But if you're serious about this, nothing beats running a small PPC campaign to see what keywords get the most traffic.
