Get as many quality and theme related links that you can pointing to your website and update your website with fresh content at least a few times a month. If you have a static website, add a blog to the site and if you have the time, blog at least 4 to 5 times a week!

    It's not too difficult.

Have a good website with lot's of unique relevant content

Buy a domain name for at least a few years in advance (.com preferred)

    Relevant links

Do some basic research on the web

All good advice here, unique content, updated often in the form of frequent blog posts, and building links to your site will both help to raise your rankings over time, which is another important factor. The older a site is in general, the easier time it has being ranked high because it's more trusted after it's been up and running for a while with good, fresh content. It's not too difficult to learn the SEO link-building methods, but I'd suggest hiring a professional who doesn't charge too much at first while you learn and then you could pick up where he or she left off if you have the time 6-12 months down the road.

Are you running a static website or blog?

Blogs are easy to SEO because you post new content all the time and Google likes that. It says you're a real person and not a spammer to them.

Also, get a lot of reputable sites to link back to yours.

For example, most of us have the webpage in our signatures, to Google sees that and says "Oh, they must be a good source for information, since this site keeps linking to them"

    That's a cliff's notes version.

If you have time, and little money, then do it yourself.

If you have money, and little time, hire someone to do it for you. But just know that it's not "rocker science"...anyone can do it with some research and initiative.

    Good Luck!

First of all, you need to gain some knowledge about the SEO tactics and then try for on page and off page SEO for your site. It will take almost 6 months for getting ranked in google.
