By far the best alternative is Facebook hands down. Done correctly you can get extremely targeted traffic. Their costs have come up a bit recently but still a lot cheaper than big bad google!

Facebook and MSN Adcenter
We've had luck with both Facebook and MSN Adcenter. While the traffic is only a small fraction of what you can find with Adwords, the quality is often better. Facebook is also great but the costs keep going up (not a big surprise considering how many people are now advertising there).
