Here's wikipedia's definition:

Basically, a blog can be whatever you want to make of it. Everything from a static "website" type of format, to a multiple conversation tool that allows you to communicate with whomever your target audience is.

As far as benefits - it is usually a tool used to support a more traditional website, and allows for more interaction, or voicing of issues/opinions that you want to discuss, but don't want to clutter up your main site with.

In a nutshell, blogs can help direct traffic to your site. If you have quality content in your blog, it can provide you with a loyal following or give you backlinks from other blogs linking to your content. Backlinks help with Search engine optimization.

You need to have quality comments have not to be duplicate. It there are a lot of duplicate comments your google rank will be affected.

Blogs are used to add fresh content on the site. Usually search engines like fresh content. If you have good content, most changes are that you'll rank good in searches for good keywords
