For Virtual Assistants...
This post is just a random thought for all the virtual assistants that are here. Do you ever get funny looks when you tell people what you do for a living?
"I'm a virtual assistant" or "I provide virtual assistance..."
In my day job I'm a virtual assistant for a small firm in San Diego, and sometimes I feel just silly trying to explain it... Or I'll say that I do marketing for real estate agents, but I think people hear "telemarketing" when I say it.
Everybody knows what a plumber is, or a salesman or an engineer or a web designer or a real estate agent...
But being a virtual assistant requires some qualifying remarks, yes?
Just a thought...
I actually love my job and I couldn't think of anything more interesting that I could be doing. I'm sure you all feel the same way.

I am also a REVA an have found that many people are still unaware of the VA industry. It makes things challenging when trying to explain what you do to prospective clients, but that challenge is also what makes the role so interesting.

virtual assistants are becoming an integral part to many types of businesses, esp small businesses in every industry. It seems right now there is a shortage of good quality vr assistants and the ones out there are sometimes hard to locate. I'm always in need of a good va to help with articles, blogs etc. pm your info....

I would have to agree with you that it still seems to be an emerging industry as far as Joe Public is concerned. There is a great discussion about VA's in the book "The 4 Hour Work Week" by Timothy Ferriss.

There are lots of people who are not still aware of this kind of job, well you don;t have to explain all the time to them, what matters most is that you love and enjoying your job....

Wanna be VA turned into Virtual Consultant
I have been in real estate for more than 20 years, have a current re license. When I started into technology with a real estate web company in San Diego about 5 years ago, I never dreamed it would turn into a wanna be virtual assistant. Was doing this before there was a name, just called work, lol.
That lead into a wonderful company and now a virtual consultant, with a team of experienced people.
Virtual assistants are a wonderful way to get work off your plate. If it is something they can do and they don't need to be there, chances are you can take your pick of the litter as most want to work from home and many are very experienced in administrative type duties, marketing assistance and technology.
Think of what you can hand off, and let it go. If they don't work out, find another one! It only costs $25 to put an ad up on Craigslist and with the economy desperate for work, there are very highly qualified individuals who will do a great job for you.
