From the efficiency point of view, we are listed in Dmoz and almost never get any visits from them.

Therefore, my advice is forget them and try Wikidweb or other local directories.
I have also heard that that it does not hold the importance with Google that it once had. I believe your better served paying the money for Yahoo in you want to be listed in a marque directory.

Well, I would say that the best and the most efficient method to get traffic from a directory is to make some simple Google search on the subject of your website, say : "real estate in pensylvania", "pensylvania properties", etc. and see which directories rank best.
You can then subscribe to those directories.

It is also better to get a top position in a new site with high potential to grow, rather than a lower position in Dmoz, Yahoo or other incumbent directories.

    Here is an example:

By the time we launched ImoMarket.com, our portal was targeted on the Romanian real estate market.
We discovered that Federal.ro was one of the best quality romanian directories, still quite unknown but very likely to grow fast. We paid something like 30

I have submitted every year for the last 4 years and I am still not included. No editors in any category close to mine so I volunteered to be an editor and received no reply.

I have over 600 pages of unique content which is more than most of the sites in my category combined.
