dmoz.org -- though i don't know what it stands for. They are known as open directory project. Unfortunatelly, you can't "suggest a site" anymore. It's been broken for over a month.

According to

DMoz stands for directory.mozilla.org
Go Mozilla and Firefox! Though the editor login has been broken for sometime and other features... Anyone know anything about this?

Yes, it is. But it seems you can't list there at the moment. You could also try to list your properties on FW. It's free at the moment.

DMOZ stands for Directory MOZilla, which is also known as the Open Directory Project (ODP). It's free, but not easy to get listed on it.

It is a turkey shoot when it comes to DMOZ. If you get in you get links from many other sites who copy DMOZ (including google). So yes it has a lot more benefits than other directory sites.

Dmoz
Personally I wouldn't bother with a dmoz listing if you're just setting up.
Many of the dmoz categories are inactive and getting everything right to list can be a long job if your website isn't exactly how they like it to begin with.
Even if you do everything right it could take a year or more before they list you.
I would personally put the effort on getting quality links from other sources and doing things like making sure you get the SEO right on your titles and tags etc.
Took me 3 years to get my main site listed. This after I posted an article on digg talking about dmoz curruption.

DMOZ is an overrated free directory that's next to impossible to get into without bribing the editors...
Okay, with my opinion aside it's one of the most valuable directories to have your business listed in if you take the time to make sure it's there (can take up to 45 days or more for a response)
