In my mind, comments are a great way to interact with users of, say, your blog and allows you to connect more to the people using your site. As long as the blog commenters are not just spamming links or saying "great read" or something along those lines then I'm a major fan of blog commenting and the added interactivity it adds to a site.

I think it makes your blog more organic, and that is always a good thing. And the volume of comments can speak of the popularity of the site and guaranteed repeat visitors.

I find most comments I get on my blog are spam. People just posting to try and drive links back to there orginal site. I end up deleting most of them to keep the quality of my blog up.

I do get some spam comments along with some real interactive comments and it feels good when I see someone has actually read my article and posted their opinion.

Usually positive in content; needs your moderation. They are no-follow links by default, so you don't get drained much. Just phase out all the spam

It depends on you (The commenter) actually. People who really know their stuff often do not reply to other people's blogs or comments solely for SEO purposes. Comments are, after all made to share just views and...well...comments.

So the answer could be both yes and no, some people comment just to drop their links, which barely works as people only clicks on the links they find interesting, while others share their views, which helps the blog owner as well as serves the SEO purposes of the commenter.

Blog commenting is useful, especially if you have a real estate website. The reason is that you can build links that backtrack to your site. The link that you build in blog commenting is also permanent and helps in your site's SEO campaign as well.
