Spam Comments
I would just like to know from all of the bloggers in this forum, how do you treat spam comments? And what do you do to stop receiving such?
-
Sometimes if I have the time I reply to the spammer by calling them out about spamming and point out the ethical implications of being a spammer. If you are a spammer, it just makes you/your business look less attractive. But hopefully moderators take care of the spam.
Saw one spammy comment/top post somwhere that mentioned the company was part of AIG, so I stated I pay my taxes so I did not see the point in giving AIG any more money.Mark Brian Silver Star Real Estate

Well, I have got a property blog and I always make it a point to check the comments personally before approving them. In case, I come across some filthy; spam comments, I send an e-mail to the respective commentor regarding its bad intentions for commenting with an option to remove the spam link if you are seeking for an approval from my side.

Someone commenting on blogs, not related messengers for the blog post. Someone posting for their advertisement. So, in these kind of commenting called spamming.
-
For me, comments that do not add any value to my blog are spam comments.
The spammers' aim is not to redirect some of your traffic to their site, which is the obvious initial conclusion; it is to increase their (or their clients') ranking in search engines.
Also, If you allow site users to include links in their comments, add rel="nofollow" to the tag. This allows search engines bots to ignore the link, so the spammer gains no benefit from adding links to your comments.

Personally, I don't just delete spam comments unless it's totally not related to the topic, I just moderate my blog every week and delete those junks. You can just flame every spam comments on your blog. They could take it as a slap and not return to your site.

As the previous poster stated about not deleting all spam, I think it depends on what you define as spam. If someone is contributing to the conversation or makes a good comment, I don't care if they put their link below their name or in the text of the comment. If they just post "great post" along with a bunch of links, then I define that as spam. In fact, many times it's a software program that automatically posts those types of generic comments along with links. I also use plugins that detect comment spamming and file them into a spam folder.

I installed akismet on my blog to help me moderate comments. Then I just deleted those comments that don't have sense and with lots of links.

As long as the comment is not directly related to the post, then it is a spam already. Always, always moderate your incoming comments. If you really don't want them posting links, then disable the rich-text box.

Always personally approve comments before they can post on your site. There is just a ridiculous amount of spam out there. Best of luck.
