Default Best way to set up a blog

I am just setting up my website and am trying to figure out the best way to set up my blog: Is it better to set up a wordpress blog and link back to my website, or set up one directly on my site? I know wordpress gets indexed well by google, but ideally I think it would make more sense to have a blog directly on my site.

I will go for a blog on my own website rather than wordpress as I can customize my blog in any damn manner, while in wordpress you do have these choices but then your account can be suspended if you include too many commercial site's weblinks.

My goal in building my blog is getting my site better indexed in search engines, rather than driving traffic to my site from the blog. So probably better to build the blog within my site, correct?

What's on your "Website" that is so important for people to find? Can't you include this content or contact/search methods as a link on your blog web page.

Static Web pages (regular website) does not get highly looked upon by google because the pages just sit there--hence static.

A blog gets updated all the time (if you actually write) and so google likes that much better. It sees every single post as another page, and it likes that too.

So my point is, is your "website" just an E-Business card, or do you have IDX search on there or something?

Either way, writing in your blog 3-4 times a week on topic will get you ranked, and people will find your blog, which should be littered with links back to your static site, if that's where you ultimately want people to be going anyway.

I would personally take it off-site and use the WordPress method. It's very easy to use, and there's a ton of help from the WordPress community when you run into trouble--which you will, with any blog type.

I've only been blogging for 6 weeks (on WordPress), and after 35 posts of on-topic content, have 8 leads that came in through the past 2 weeks. I can't wait to see what happens in a couple months...

Steve, Thanks for your reply. But when you say regular website blogs are "static", if I write on my website blog daily, wouldn't it be constantly crawled on by search engines just like a wordpress blog? I guess I still fail to the see the difference.

    VaInvestor,

First of all the feedback you have gotten to this point nears the wrong side of the tracks. I hate to speak negatively about others posts but I feel you are being given poor information. You will always be better off building your main blog on your websites domain. you will still draw traffic to the blog and you can use widgets to drive traffic to other pages on the static portion of the domain.

Next use a self hosted option for WordPress and don't listen to the posts about not being able to customize the blog. That statement is only correct in regards to WordPress.com blogs. A self hosted WordPress option will allow you to customize your site in anyway possible via PHP. Next the power with WordPress is based on the plugins. There is a set of plugins that are a must for SEO along with a few other that make being a blogger much easier.

You can set up tons of free blogs on all kinds of subjects not 100% aligned with your sites goals. These can be great for driving almost related traffic to your site that would be difficult to obtain otherwise. Direct message me to discuss plugins and use of widgets to reach all of your goals.

There is no reason that your whole site can't be a blog.

With the various plugins available it is very easy to have your front page appear static if that is what you want.

This way it is very easy to have your whole site uniform in appearance.

Google loves wordpress but as the poster above mentioned it must be hosted on your own domain.

Keep in mind though that a blog is almost useless if you do not post unique content regularly (say at least once every 2 weeks).

Let me know if you need any help.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback. It definitely sounds like setting up the blog on my own domain is the way to go.

Why not do both? Creating a blog in wordpress then creating anchored texts will count as backlinks to your site and as we all know having lots of backlinks helps you in ranking well in search engines.
