    Default Legal help!

    Hey! I'm Emily (new here)
I've been searching for places to RENT online and think I have finally found a good place for a good price except the owner is in West Africa for 2 years (which is why he needs a tenant).

I haven't gotten in depth with it yet but how exactly does one go about this as far as getting it in writing that we are the tenants of such and such place for such and such a time and agree to pay such and such amount to this person...?

I'd hate to miss out on a good place because of my lack of knowledge or end up with something that I wasn't expecting.

    THANK YOU!

    Hello Emily,

This isn't legal advice because I'm not an attorney. Usually people sign a lease indicating length of time, lease amount, and ect. These days a lot of the paperwork can be done over the internet or by fax, so the fact that the owner is out of the country may not be a problem at all.
Also, you didn't mention how you found this property. It might be that the owner has a real estate agent working for them and that agent should be able to help you out. Its also possible that they may have given a "power of attorney" to someone who can sign the docs for them.

    Hey Emily,

I would be super careful when you are dealing with someone that is not face-to-face. I have been hearing about a lot of rental scams from people in Africa and other countries. Basically there are people that will ask you to pay a deposit by wire transfer or the such and then never get back in touch with you. These people usually don't own the property either. They advertise it just to get your money. Just be careful.
