Worse than a newbie...
I actually have a CA real estate license...but have never used it and dont remember anything from my classes...ive been reading and searching through this forum for the past couple days.
I am interested in finally using the license to purchase a home and was wondering how i should go about it. Do setup an appointment with the agent and then tell them i have a license? Do i try to find the broker?
any advise would really be helpful...thanks...

Everyone needs to start at the beginning so don't be too hard on yourself.
I didn't think you needed a real estate license to purchase a home in any US state - has the changed in CA?
But if you're going into the business of listing/selling real estate on the behalf of others, then a license would be in order.

Sounds like you think your license is going to save you some of the listing agents commission. Most listing agents will rake you over the coals for their seller clients and then keep all of the commission. Just because you have a license doesn't mean they have to share the commission with you.
Your best bet would be to shop around and find a good agent who won't charge you any commission, they can get it from the listing agent, to use as your buyers agent. This approach will be cheaper in the long run and you will have a better chance of finding the right house.Your Outer Banks real estate agent. Learn how to buy Outer Banks foreclosures.

The only way I could see another agent helping you out for free is if you are close friends with the agent. Don't take this the wrong way but just because someone has a license doesn't mean they're a real estate professional.

If you want to actually get in to real estate as a career, I would start the search process for a broker that you are comfortable with and that you think you can learn from. If you are looking to save money, but not change careers, find an agent that you feel is going to work for you on your behalf to negotiate the best possible deal.
You're on the right track!
