Default Single Agent sell/buy Commission Split Negotiate

We are fixing to sell our home and move into a larger home in the same area. We have local realtor in mind who is very familiar with the area and our plan was to use his services for selling our home and the purchase of another. I believe he is open for discounting the commission (6%) but I do not what to inhibit potential buyers agents. Is it kosher to ask this agent if he will consider taking a lesser commission say 2% while keeping the buyers side high at 3%?

Or am I way of base in thinking this way...

    Regards

    Dave

    Default ask him

I would definately say ask him. Don't get my wrong, as an agent I always hate getting reduced commission. However, he would be a moron to not take your 5% offer, since you will probably buy a home through him as well as well as become a lifetime client of his.
